Mt. Edgecumbe is the volcano which dominates Sitka's horizon. It has been in active for more than 1,000 and is the subject of many cultural stories of the indigenous Alaska Native Tribe, Tlingits. It is located on the island of Kruzof. This trip begins with a boat ride to Fred's Creek, the location of the volcano's trail head. It is a 14 mile hike, round trip, and the view and photo opportunities are well worth every minute. Guides are well versed in the surrounding flora and fauna, as we ll as the local wildlife, bear safety and wilderness response. Guests have lunch and take a small break at an amazing view point. This trip is designed for reasonable physically fit individuals. Although the trail is well maintained, the last two miles have a significant grade. Not all groups will have time to make it to the top as the boat returns at a designated time, making your turn around time at the discretion of the guides. You'll definitely want to take a small camera on this one! Tour operates under a special use permit from the Tongass National Forest. |
