This trip is for the adventurous visitor who would like to explore Sitka's marine life in a exciting way. Your trip begins with our guides getting you dry suited up and ready to go, then boarding one of Island Fever's vessels. The twenty minute boat ride is quick but very beautiful as you wiz by mountain views and islands. No Thorofare Bay consists of two bay connected by a tidal surge of salt water which moves swiftly during when tides are changing. Both bays and the surge are filled with an abundance of marine life. You will begin your drift snorkel in one bay, floating slowing along viewing life on the ocean floor, then move quickly into the surge where the current sweeps you into the next bay. After the rush, you slow again snorkeling over an amazing amount of marine life. There are lush kelp forests and eel grass beds covered with plumose anemones, sea stars, sun stars, sea urchins, and rock scallops. You will snorkel over a bed of more than 100 red and purple sea urchins varying in size to as large as 2 feet across. Guests pass over sea star colonies of more than 30 stars, all of different colors and sizes. The macro life which covers the ocean floor is a kaleidoscope of pinks, greens, and purples. This trip is a favorite, but please keep in mind that it is designed for the more adventurous, physically fit guests. |
