DURATION: 10 hours
Shelikof Bay is located on Kruzoff Island, about an hours boat ride from Sitka. Kruzoff Island was utilized as a six-inch gun battery during World War II, during which a road system was constructed. This road system is no longer maintained and new growth has covered much of the area. However, it provides access to remote locations such as Shelikof Bay. The trip begins with a ride on our landing craft, the Island Fever, to Mud Bay. The bikes are unloaded and guests take a six mile ride to the trail head of Shelikof and prepare for a two mile hike to the coast. Shelikof Beach is a mile of black volcanic sand. The view is amazing and the beach combing is wonderful. Guests have lunch, are free to walk the beach or hike the local trails. Guides are careful not to let you wander too far, as bears are heavily populated in the area. Imagine a day in the Alaska wilderness, taking in the breathless views, relaxing on a sandy beach, and capturing pictures you only dream of. This trip is designed for the physically fit person. Guests will bike a total of 12 miles and hike 4 miles. The terrian is rocky and has significant grades in some sections. This is a trip that you are not likely to forget, physically and mentally. Tour operates under a special use permit from the Tongass National Forest. |
